At the beginning of January the youth ministry started a new curriculum called Tracing the Thread. I wanted to try something new from our regular model. We were teaching through sermon series on Wednesday nights and on Sundays following the church wide curriculum. There was nothing wrong with that model but I wanted Sundays and Wednesdays to connect. This new curriculum we started connects our two teaching times together.
Tracing the Thread takes a New Testament passage and connects it to an Old Testament passage. The main goal is to show how Jesus has been there throughout the whole story. The way we have been teaching this curriculum is to take the Old Testament passage on Wednesday. Then on Sunday taking the New Testament and seeing how the two passages connect.
The first week on Wednesday we read Genesis 1:1. Talking about how in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Then on Sunday we read John 1:1-3, that in the beginning was the word and the word was God and was with God. We learned that God has been and will always be there. “John makes it clear that the Word is not just the beginning, but it is the beginning of the beginning. He was there in the beginning, before anything was.”
Making connections like this help our students see how the whole Bible is one great story about God. As we continue this series I ask that you pray for our students. Pray that God will teach them things about scripture that they may have never known.
