This month, I will be sharing snippets from a booklet on Family Worship.
This is one of three booklets from the Family Guidance Series, written by Joel R. Beeke (link below).
As mentioned, over the coming weeks we will go through the book Family Worship by Joel. R. Beeke. The booklet is divided into five chapters, or sections and they are as follows:
#2 The Duty of Family Worship
14 “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:14-15
The last line of this Scripture is a “tattoo verse”. Do you know what I mean by that? Often, folks will get a tattoo of a Scripture, saying, meaning, quote… (fill in the blank) of something that they are passionate about, or use it as a conversation piece, or as a reminder to them. (This is not a blog post on how I feel about tattoos). What I mean though is the saying “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” has become a very common thing to say, post, et.
BUT…are we really serving Him…are we really worshipping Him in the ways we were instructed?
Below are three ways our families should worship daily (pg 10-12):
1: Daily instruction in the Word of God
18 “You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 19 You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. Deuteronomy 11:18-19
2: Daily prayer to the throne of God
Daily prayer teaches and reminds our families to give thanks for the provision the Lord has provided that day, while also allowing us to ask for forgiveness for our sins. Jeremiah 10:5, Psalm 128:3, 1 Tim. 4:4-5, 1 Cor. 10:31, Matt. 4:4
3: Daily singing in the praise of God
“The Lord is to be worshiped daily by the singing of psalms. God is glorified and families are edified. Because these songs are God’s Word, singing them is a means of instruction, enlightening the understanding. Psalm 188:15, Psalm 66:1-2, Col 3:16
